Tell Congress: No War on Iran
The United States and Israel continue an unprovoked, illegal, immoral and barbaric war on Iran. Your representative and senators need to hear from you now!
Congress has several tools available to exercise its authority. Lawmakers can:
- use the War Powers Resolution to address unauthorized hostilities,
- conduct oversight and investigations into military operations,
- request Government Accountability Office audits,
- place conditions on appropriations,
- use the National Defense Authorization Act to impose restrictions and reporting requirements,
- exercise congressional authority over arms transfers and military assistance to Israel.
Because Congress has the power of the purse, lawmakers can determine how federal funds are appropriated and establish statutory limitations or conditions on the use of those funds; constituents have the right to know how their representatives plan to use these powers.
An overwhelming number of Americans oppose this illegal war of choice that has impacted our economy and destabilized the Middle East. Every dollar spent on Trump’s war prevents us from accessing social programs that benefit working-class Americans, and it is time for this to stop.
It's common — and absolutely right — to lament the massive financial expense of the war on Iran, but the reason that the Pentagon has the funds lying around to launch wars without permission is the gargantuan military budget, which Congress is now working on dramatically increasing yet again. Each war is a symptom of the disease of military spending, and we won't end the wars by piling on more spending than anyone can easily spend.
